    Songs to Stop Drinking By

    Hi everyone,

Our popular culture glorifies drinking alcohol. We even have Hangover 2 as if Hangover 1 wasn't enough. I was listening to the radio the other day and Carrie Underwood's "Wasted" came on. I was struck by "I don't want to live my life wasted". I went home & found the lyrics and started trying to find other songs to support stopping drinking. So here are a few I found. If this strikes a chord with you (smile), feel free to add to this.

For each song, I've included a few of the lyrics and a link so you can listen to the songs.

    Carrie Underwood, "Wasted" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GCFx...eature=related

Another glass of whisky but it still don't kill the pain
So he stumbles to the sink and pours it down the drain
He says it's time to be a man and stop living for yesterday
    Gotta face it.

Cause' I don't wanna' spend my life jaded
Waiting to wake up one day and find
That I've let all these years go by
    Wasted

Oh I don't wanna' keep on wishing, missing
The still of the morning, the color of the night
I ain't spending no more time
    Wasted

    Pink, "Sober" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XVrWSdCTN4

I don't wanna be the girl who has to fill the silence...
The quiet scares me 'cause it screams the truth
Please don't tell me that we had that conversation
When I won't remember, save your breath, 'cause what's the use?

    Aahh, the night is calling
And it whispers to me softly, "come and play"
    Aahh, I am falling
And if I let myself go, I'm the only one to blame

    I'm comin' down
    Comin' down
    Comin' down
    Spinnin' round
    Spinnin' round
    Spinnin' round
    Looking for myself.. Sober

    Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Poison Whiskey” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X6IMe_ITAXo

“Take a tip from me, people... brothers can't you see
Ain't no future in ole poison whiskey.
They're gonna rush you down to see that doctor,
Yeah the doctor gonna check yo head.
The only thing he's gonna tell ya baby
    "Stop drinkin' Juohnny walkers Red
Don't drink poison whiskey, don't you drink it boy.”

I like the lyrics to the following song but it ain't the greatest music you've ever heard in your life (sorry, boys). Still worth a listen because it really speaks to that part of us which is trying and having a hard time

Avett Bros “When I drink” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1tV8zSsMFSo

    When I drink
I say things I don't want to say
    I do things I don't wanna do
    I talk mean to you . . .

It's the only way to keep that last bit of sanity
Maybe I don't have to be good but I can try to be
At least a little better than I've been so far . . .

    Just do your best
    Just do your best

If you're up for listening to a parody, here's a good one. If you're in a cranky mood, skip this one.

    Hawkins “I don’t drink beer” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t4a6I1bJtBg

Sample lyrics (remember, it's a parody although there's truth in laughter)
When I’m out driving in my car I like to be able to steer, so I don't drink beer.
When I’ve giving my wife a hug I don’t want to throw up in her ear, so I don't drink beer.

Finally, for a celebration of life, this one has nothing to do with drinking but it makes me feel good, and I'm not even usually a Cat Stevens fan.

    Cat Stevens, "Peace Train" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6mKMV0d2cs

Now I've been smiling lately, thinking about the good things to come . . .
Now come and join the living, it's not so far from you
And it's getting nearer, soon it will all be true

    Awesome idea, Carol!

For me, the most powerful performance in regards to sobriety is "Sober" by Tool.

Sample lyrics: "Why can we not be sober, just one to start this over...."

    Scandal - Goodbye to You

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y4FUQFqqzI8

Those times I waited for you seem so long ago
I wanted you far too much to ever let you go
You know you never got by "I feel it too"
And I guess I never could stand to lose
It's such a pity to say

    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you

Could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holding on
The days are dull, the nights are long
    Guess it's better to say

    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you

    'Cause baby it's over now
No need to talk about it
    It's not the same
My love for you's just not the same
And my heart, and my heart
And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
And my love won't stand the pain
And my heart, and my heart
And my heart can't stand the strain
And my love, and my love
    And my love...

    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you

Now, could I have loved someone like the one I see in you
Yeah, I remember the good times baby now, and the bad times too
These last few weeks of holding on
The days are dull, the nights are long
    Guess it's better to say

    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you
    Goodbye to you

    Goodbye baby
    So long darling
    Goodbye to you

Ken1, I listened to Scandal's "Goodbye to You" and you're right, it's a perfect song to stop drinking by. I've added it to the thread for anyone who's interested.

I still love Carrie Underwood's "Wasted" & Pink's "Sober". I heard Sober on the radio yesterday and realized I didn't capture all the lyrics below, but it's worth a listen.

    Happy NOT Drinking, everyone!!

Carol,...thanks for the link, the song popped into my head pouring out some vodka. As I watched it go down the drain, Goodbye to you! started playing in my head and made me laugh. I think it nailed it for me. I like the original video:

By the way this was my old song, but no more!

    Never Can Say Goodbye Lyrics
    Artist(Band):Michael Jackson

    Never can say goodbye
    No no no no, I
    Never can say goodbye

Even though the pain and heartache
Seems to follow me wherever I go
Though I try and try to hide my feelings
    They always seem to show
Then you try to say you're leaving me
And I always have to say no...

    Tell me why
    Is it so

    That I
    Never can say goodbye
    No no no no, I
    Never can say goodbye

Everytime I think I had enough
I start heading for the door
    There's a very strange vibration
That pierces me right to the core
It says turn around you fool
You know you love her more and more

    Tell me why
    Is it so
    Don't wanna let yo go

I keep thinkin that our problems
Soon are all gonna work out
But there's that same unhappy feeling and there's that anguish, there's that doubt
*It's that same old did ya hang up
*Can't do with you or without
    Tell me why
    Is it so
    Don't wanna let you go

    -----------------------------------------
    Have a great day!

Love Pink...Sober! It's weird that I never truly "listened" to the words in the past, but now they have a new meaning.

Hey, all - a song that I finally got to on my Ipod after purchasing the album for another song. I think it is powerful for people in addiction and for those hanging onto to those in addiction (the perspective from which the song is written).

    Check it out.

This is one I've been listening to . . . for awhile. It is complicated - essentially an ambiguous love-song/ goodbye to booze. It isn't straight forward, but it does get to the magical / romantic way we (I) approach booze and all that implies.

Gogol Bordello, 'Alcohol" (name says it all)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fmZCve025Q (video is cheesy as this is an acoustical group and they don't make videos so much.)

Here is a classic from Jimmy Buffet (My head hurts, my feet stink and I don't love Jesus),...and the lyrics need no explination. I always thought this song was hilarious.

Downloaded Adele's albums "19" and "21". Love her voice, that style, and her songs. I like listening to her whether it is a good day, or bad. Just love her voice I guess.

Kimber, "Set Fire to the Rain" made me think of you today! Hope you have a better day!

I guess this could be considered a song to stop drinking by, if you're thinking of your loved ones... this song, "Let It Die" by Foo Fighters, is one of my favorites. Dave Grohl is the lead singer of the band, and he was also the drummer for Nirvana back in the day. I've heard he wrote this song after Kurt Cobain overdosed on heroin (I love stupid trivia about bands). The song is very moving to me. Reminds me of how I felt about Mom for a long time, and the buildup throughout the song really makes you feel his hurt, frustration, and anger.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vxbMh8QMQ8

The lyrics are pretty repetitive, but here they are:

Heart of gold but it lost its pride
    Beautiful veins and bloodshot eyes
I've seen your face in another light
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Why'd you have to go and let it die?
Why'd you have to go and let it die?
In too deep and out of time.
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

A simple man and his blushing bride
    Intravenous, intertwined
Hearts gone cold your hands were tied
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Why'd you have to go and let it die?
Why'd you have to go and let it die?
In too deep and out of time.
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Do you ever think of me?
    You're so considerate.
Do you ever think of me?
    Oh, so considerate.

In too deep and lost in time
Why'd you have to go and let it die?
    Beautiful veins and bloodshot eyes
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Hearts gone cold and hands were tied.
Why'd you have to go and let it die?
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Do you ever think of me?
    You're so considerate.
Did you ever think of me?
    Oh, so considerate.

In too deep and lost in time
Why'd you have to go and let it die?
    Beautiful veins and bloodshot eyes
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Hearts gone cold and hands were tied.
Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Why'd you have to go and let this die?
Why'd you have to go and let this die?
Why'd you have to go and let this die?
Why'd you have to go and let this die?

Why'd you have to go and let it die?

Forgot all about K's Choice. That's a good song!

The whole album "The Thirteenth Step" by A Perfect Circle is about battling addiction and the range of emotions he goes through. Awesome album. The last song is called "Gravity" and since I can't post the lyrics to the whole album, I'll just post those here. You can get the rest of the lyrics at http://www.azlyrics.com/p/perfect.html.

    "Gravity"

    Lost again
    Broken and weary
    Unable to find my way
    Tail in hand
    Dizzy and clearly unable to
    Just let this go

I am surrendering to gravity and the unknown
Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
    I choose to live

    I fell again
Like a baby unable to stand on my own
    Tail in hand
Dizzy and clearly unable to just let this go
High and surrendering to gravity and the unknown
Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live, I choose to live, I choose to live

Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
    Help me survive the bottom

    Calm these hands before they
    Snare another pill and
    Drive another nail down another
    Needy hole please release me

I am surrendering to gravity and the unknown
Catch me heal me lift me back up to the sun
I choose to live, I choose to live

Two I like are Dreaming by Loundon Wainwright: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xs9eSjcAug4

    Lyrics to Dreaming:
I'd rather be dreaming than living
Living's just too hard to do
    It's chances not choices
    Noises not voices
A day's just a thing to get through
Living's just too hard to do

I'd rather be dreaming than talking
There's nothing to hear or to say
    With ears covered mouth closed
    The world is opposed
    Nothing gets in or away
There's nothing to hear or to say

I'd rather be dreaming than thinking
Thoughts are small comfort to me
    Dreams might be pretend
    But at least dreams end
And I just can't stop thinking you see
Thoughts are small comfort to me

I'd rather be dreaming than sleeping
Just sleeping you're just as well dead
    In dreams I can fly
    In dreams I don't die
That's why I lie here in this bed
Just sleeping you're just as well dead

    I'd rather be dreaming

Another good one from the excellent addiction movie Down to the Bone is Low Point of Disgust http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4izoTTkhcw:

    Once, I was lost
    to the point of disgust
    I had in my sight
    lack of vision
    lack of light
    I fell hard
    I fell fast
    mercy me
    it'll never last

    then, in the dust
    all the things
    we discussed
    were thrown to the wind
    so at last
    we begin
    'cuz we fall hard
    we fall fast
    mercy me
    it'll never last

Probably not too many Eminem fans here... lol But he recently got sober - with the help of Elton John, of all people - and I really like this song. I can relate to feeling like I'm talking to myself at times, and ask myself a lot lately, am I the one who's going crazy? We've probably all been there a time or two.

    "Talkin' 2 Myself"

    Eminem (feat. Kobe)

A-yo, Before I start this song man
I just want to thank everybody for being so patient
And bearing with me over these last couple of years
While I figure this shit out

    Is anybody out there?
It feels like I'm talkin to myself
No one seems to know my struggle
    And everything I come from
    Can anybody hear me?
I guess I keep talkin to myself
It feels like I'm going insane
Am I the one who's crazy?

So why in the world do I feel so alone
Nobody but me, I'm on my own
    Is there anyone out there
Who feels the way I feel
If there is, let me hear just so I know I'm not the only one

I went away I guess to open up some lanes
But there was no one who even knew that I was going through growin' pains
Hatred was flowing through my veins
On the verge of going insane
I almost made a song dissin Lil Wayne
It's like I was jealous of him 'cause of the attention he was gettin'
    I felt horrible about myself
He was spittin and I wasn't
Anyone who was buzzin back then coulda got it
    Almost went at Kanye too
God it feels like I'm goin' psychotic
Thank god that I didn't do it
I would've had my ass handed to me
And I knew it but proof wasn't here to see me through it
Im in the booth poppin another pill tryna talk myself into it
Are you stupid? You gon' start dissin people for no reason?
Especially when you can't even write a decent punchline even
You're lying to yourself, you're slowly dying, you're denying
Your health is declining with your self-esteem, you're crying out for help

Marshall you're no longer the man, that's a bitter pill to swallow
All I know is I'm wallowin', self-loathing and hollow
Bottoms up on the pill bottle
Maybe I'll hit my bottom tomorrow
My sorrow echoes in this hall though
But I must be talkin to the wall though
I don't see nobody else (I guess I keep talkin to myself)
But all these other rappers suck is all that I know
I've turned into a hater, I've put up a false bravado
But Marshall is not a egomaniac thats not his motto
He's not a desperado he's desperate, his thoughts are bottled inside him
One foot on the brake one on the throttle
Fallin asleep with writers block in the parking lot of mcdonalds
But instead of feeling sorry for yourself do something about it
Admit you got a problem you brain is clouded you pouted long enough
It isn't them its you you fuckin baby
Quit worrying about what they do and do fuckin shady
    I'm fucking going crazy

So I pick up myself off the ground and fuckin swam before I drowned
Hit my bottom so hard I bounce twice suffice this time around
It's different them last two albums didn't count
Encore I was on drugs, Relapse I was flushing em out
I've come up to make it up to you no more fucking around
I've got something to prove to fans I feel like I let em down
So please accept my apology I finally feel like I'm back to normal
I feel like me again, so let me formally reintroduce myself to you for those of you who dont know
The new me's back to the old me and homie I don't show no
Signs of slowin up, oh and I'm blowin up all over
My life is no longer a movie but the shows aint over homos
I'm back with a vengeance homie weezy keep ya head up
T.I. keep ya head up, Kanye keep ya head up
Don't let up, keep slayin em
Rest in Peace to DJ AM
Cause I know what its like
I struggle with this shit every single day

I couldn't find an official video to the song, but I imagine there are few things cooler than getting to see Maynard live. I think you could substitute "drink" for the use of the word "bullet" in this song and it would still pertain.

    Help me if you can
    It's just that this
Is not the way I'm wired
    So could you please,

    Help me understand why
You've given in to all these
    Reckless dark desires
    You're
    Lying to yourself again
    Suicidal imbecile
    Think about it
You're pounding on a fault line
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
    Over this, why do you
Wanna throw it away like this
Such a mess, well I don't wanna watch you

    Disconnect and self destruct
    One bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die

    Medicated, drama queen,
    picture perfect, numb belligerence
Narcissistic, drama queen, craving fame and all it's decadence

    Lying through your teeth again
    Suicidal imbecile
    Think about it
You're pounding on a fault line
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this, why do you wanna
    Throw it away like this
Such a mess, well I don't wanna watch you

    Disconnect and self destruct
    One bullet at a time
What's your rush now, everyone will have his day to die

    They were right about you
    They were right about you

    Lying to my face again
    Suicidal imbecile
You're pounding on a fault line
What'll it take to get it through to you precious
Over this, why do you wanna
    Throw it away like this
Such a mess, over this, over THIS?!

    Disconnect and self destruct,
    One bullet at a time
What's your hurry, everyone will have his day to die
If you choose to pull the trigger, should your drama prove sincere,
Do it somewhere far away from here

I ran these two by a friend of mine and she said I should post them here. Check out this one:

    Triumph, Fight the Good Fight
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rlJA-cN2C_0

The days grow shorter and the nights are getting long
Feels like we're running out of time
Every day it seems much harder tellin' right from wrong
You got to read between the lines

Don't get discouraged, don't be afraid, we can
    Make it through another day
Make it worth the price we pay

The Good Book says it's better to give than to receive
I do my best to do my part
Nothin' in my pockets I got nothin' up my sleeve
I keep my magic in my heart

Keep up your spirit, keep up your faith, baby
    I am counting on you
You know what you've got to do

    CHORUS:
Fight the good fight every moment
    Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
    It's your only way

All your life you've been waiting for your chance
Where you'll fit into the plan
But you're the master of your own destiny
So give and take the best that you can

You think that a little more money can buy your soul some rest
You better think something else instead
You're so afraid of being honest with yourself
You'd better take a look inside your head

Nothing is easy, nothing good is free
But I can tell you where to start
Take a look inside your heart
There's an answer in your heart

    CHORUS:

Fight the good fight every moment
    Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay

    Every moment of your lifetime
    Every minute every day
Fight the good fight every moment
Make it worth the price we pay
    Yeah

And this one, an old one for supporting others:

Don Williams, I Believe In You
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rktW3byqdOs

    I don't believe in superstars,
    Organic food and foreign cars.
    I don't believe the price of gold;
    The certainty of growing old.
That right is right and left is wrong,
That north and south can't get along.
That east is east and west is west.
And being first is always best.

    But I believe in love.
    I believe in babies.
I believe in Mom and Dad.
    And I believe in you.

Well, I don't believe that heaven waits,
    For only those who congregate.
I like to think of God as love:
He's down below, He's up above.
    He's watching people everywhere.
He knows who does and doesn't care.
    And I'm an ordinary man,
Sometimes I wonder who I am.

    But I believe in love.
    I believe in music.
    I believe in magic.
    And I believe in you.

I know with all my certainty,
What's going on with you and me,
    Is a good thing.
It's true, I believe in you.

    I don't believe virginity,
Is as common as it used to be.
In working days and sleeping nights,
That black is black and white is white.
    That Superman and Robin Hood,
    Are still alive in Hollywood.
    That gasoline's in short supply,
The rising cost of getting by.

    But I believe in love.
    I believe in old folks.
    I believe in children.
    I believe in you.

    I believe in love.
    I believe in babies.
I believe in Mom and Dad.
    And I believe in you.

    Good songs, Ken!

I love, love, love this guy's voice. Saw these guys live when they first came out and his voice is just as powerful in concert. Gives me goosebumps.

    "Save Me" - Shinedown

    I got a candle
    And I've got a spoon
I live in a hallway with no doors
    And no rooms

    Under a windowsill
    They all were found
A touch of concrete within the doorway
    Without a sound

Someone save me if you will
And take away all these pills
And please just save me if you can
From my blasphemy in my wasteland

    How did I get here
    And what went wrong
    Couldn't handle forgiveness
    Now I'm far beyond gone

    I can hardly remember
The look of my own eyes
How can I love this a life so dishonest
    It made me compromise

Someone save me if you will
And take away all these pills
And please just save me if you can
From my blasphemy in my wasteland

    Jump in the water
    Jump in with me
    Jump on the altar
    Lay down with me

    The hardest question to answer
    Is why

    Why

Someone save me if you will
And take away all these pills
And please just save me if you can
From my blasphemy in my wasteland

    Someone save me
    Someone save me
    Somebody save me
    Somebody save me
    Please don't erase me
